Welcome to Harlow Outdoors
We have an amazing variety of activities on site such as the high ropes course and climbing tower to set your heart pounding or sailing and windsurfing get the wind in your hair. For residential experiences we use a variety of local venues including South Wales and the French Pyrenees. Please take a look at what we can offer.
Sixty years ago one of the founders of outdoor education, Kurt Haan, believed that we were ‘all more capable than we knew’ and ‘were all more capable when working as part of a team’. Those basic principles are embodied in our work and help us to deal with current challenges such as social inclusion, self esteem, improving learning performance, problem solving and communication skills. The groups we work with fall into the following broad categories, please take a look at those that interest you. Schools and colleges. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Special Needs, Youth Groups and Clubs.

Other Facilities include the well Equipped fitness gym open to general use throughout the year and being only two minutes from the station very popular with local business men and women wanting to keep fit. We also have two narrow boat for hire either as an on site residential facility or for relaxing journeys up the Stort Navigation River.

Based at the Harlow Centre we also have a number of clubs for adults and children more details are on the Venues and Activities page.

As part of the youth service all our staff take a serious and professional approach to their work but that doesn’t stop them providing you with non- stop fun and excitement. All have the relevant national governing body qualifications relevant to the activities they teach. As a centre we are recognised by the Royal Yachting Association for Sailing and Windsurfing and approved by the British Canoe Union to run various paddle sports. Please meet our friendly staff before you visit!
The site is small but crammed full of adventurous activities to get the adrenalin flowing. On site we have a high ropes course with it’s mind blowing trapeze jump and thrilling zip line; the climbing tower and for those with a steady arm the archery range. On site access to the water provides the opportunity to canoe, kayak and dragon boat. We have all the usual facilities including changing rooms with hot showers, drinks and snack machines and cooking facilities for those camping on site. We are also very proud of our review and teaching rooms one of which is fitted out as a computer suite from which groups can publish reports on their activities and upload the days events onto this site.

We take safety very seriously and are approved for all the activities we run by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority. This means we use only the latest equipment which is fully tested and approved, the activities are run in accordance with current best practice and we maintain an up to date Code of Practice through which all our staff are trained.

In order that you get the greatest benefit from the activities we facilitate the learning using a number of techniques including active reviewing. After the activities the group are invited to discuss the leaning outcomes and these are given meaning by comparison with events in daily life. But don’t worry the reviews are just as much fun as the activities themselves and we often use fun exercises such as role play, news reports and I.T. Before you visit us you will be asked to set your objectives and intended outcomes so that we can tailor the course to your specific needs. These activities and exercises have just as much relevance for corporate customers as youth groups and we are equally able to deal with a range of work based issues. We are part of Essex Youth Service offering high quality outdoor education to a variety of young people throughout the County with strong links to groups in Harlow District and the local area. Our expertise and activities also allow us to offer courses for adult groups and development training for local companies.
Special Projects. The Centre has run a number of special projects over the years many of which are funded by the charity Active Works.
